Select an object for the bare awareness to recognize and observe during the meditation time. With the right effort, the chosen object will be continually recognized and observed to induce the establishment of the permanent presence of the bare awareness in the mind. The bare awareness will take care of the recognition and observation of rising thoughts, memories, and feelings. The bare awareness, with its nonself characteristic as an observer, will uncover the nonself characteristic of the thoughts, memories, and feelings.

Question: " I was instructed to let go an upset, but it did not go. How can I let it go?
Shared experience from Jagare Vinh Pham: This is a nice example of the impure awareness. A human being recognizes the upset not only by the pure awareness but also by the recalling of the past upset in mind. Bring the mind to the present time to cut off the memory of the upset by recognizing a currently coming object. The recognizing of the coming object will bring pure awareness to the main stage, cutting the effect of the memory on the awareness. The upset will go right at that moment. Also, with the presence of pure awareness, a right reflexion can shed light on the ignorance: the mind reacted because it had been working with the worldly dharma. With these activities, right mindfulness (right concentration) is dominating the mind. Currently, focus the observation to recognize the presence of the peacefulness because the mind is with right awareness and right concentration This is different from the method of distraction to push the upset to the back of the mind.
